What to Expect on Your First Visit

Your first psychiatric assessment may be done in an hour. At this appointment, you will be asked to complete paperwork, then, a clinician will guide you to the nurse’s station to check your measurements and vital signs, like blood pressure and weight. Then, they’ll take you to the assessment room.

During your assessment interview, you’ll be asked about your reasons for seeing us and what has been happening in your life over the past weeks and months. We’ll also be asking you about your current medications and their amounts or doses, your treatment and medical history, and other pertinent information, including your family, housing, academics, and employment. All these questions help us gain insight into your background and what possible symptoms you may be experiencing. After acquiring all of this information, a doctor will come in, and we will review the information with the doctor.

Furthermore, the doctor will have to ask some additional questions, after which, they will make a diagnosis and develop the treatment plan with you, focusing on factors like therapy, medication, and any necessary testing. Once the plan has been finalized, the doctor will prescribe your medications, if there are any, and refer you for an appointment with our therapists.

Though it can be uncomfortable to share your answers to our personal questions, it is essential for us to know them to discover how we can best help you. Rest assured, this information will remain confidential.

Scheduling the First Appointment

To schedule a New Patient appointment, call our office at 336-505-9494. We ask that the caller be the patient, parent, or legal guardian of the patient. Our phone intake specialists will verify insurance benefits and obtain authorization if necessary, then they will call the patient/guardian back to schedule the initial appointment. If you are unable to keep your appointment, please call to reschedule the appointment as soon as possible, preferably at least 24 hours in advance.

**We ask that the legal guardian be present during the patient’s initial appointment. Please bring a picture ID, current insurance card, and co-payment. The New Patient paperwork may be filled out in the office before or on the appointment time.
